We got up early and went for a walk up a hill and through the fields above
the town. The views were lovely and we met a friendly calf along the way who
seemed to like having his ears rubbed. We then stopped to have delicious pear
caramel cake (with LOTS of pear) at the restaurant from the night before, since
we had been too full for their beautiful desserts. Our next stop was Otway park, where we drove to the lighthouse and looked for
koalas in the trees (the book had suggested that we might find some there). We
saw three, two who were asleep and one whose eyes were open but who only moved
to turn his head once. The lighthouse was pretty standard, but the views were lovely, and we were
able to see an amazing bird play around in the wind currents-swooping and
gliding, and making huge vertical circles in the air, which meant at times he
was flying upside down! We poked around the grounds some because the signs said
that you could spot echidnas there, but alas, we didn't see any. We continued along the Great Ocean Road, stopping at all of the pull-offs to
see the amazing sea stacks and arches that have been created by the ocean
wearing away at the rock. We were fortunate enough to have amazing weather the
entire time. On one of the beaches there were large numbers of partial sponges
that had washed up on the shore. According to one of the signs we read, sponges
are predominant in the underwater landscape of Southern Australia, and 90% of
the animals and plants there are endemic. If it weren't for my ear infection, I
would want to do a diving trip here! We eventually made it to Port Campbell
where we had reservations at an extremely nice hostel. We had dinner, continued
to read Lord of the Rings out loud, and headed off to bed. |
