Day 3: More of Melbourne

Friday, March 28, 2003

Pat and Angie headed off to the airport to get to Tasmania and spend some time traveling before we joined them. We headed into Melbourne in the early afternoon. We wandered through Chinatown, found camera accessories and ended up going up the Rialto Towers for a more complete view of Melbourne. It's was pretty to see it from the 55th story (the highest office building in the Southern Hemisphere) and you could see the layout with the ocean and river and buildings. The city seems to go on and on in all directions. We also took sticker pictures of the two of us to put on our postcards. We rode the public transport (which seems to be extremely good here) back to meet Cat at her house.

After we made a couple of salads we went to her friend's potluck. I had a hard time understanding everything people said with their accents. They were mostly Cat's friends from work and they talked about their clients a fair amount which was interesting. The only man there other than Jason was very into Aussie-rules football ("footy"), which is a national phenomenon. It's very fast paced and a bit difficult to understand. You can run with the ball (which is like a rugby ball) tackle the person with the ball (no pads whatsoever) and either bump the ball as you would in volleyball, or kick it. When you run you have to dribble it approximately every five steps or so. If you launch it between the two main goalposts at the end you get 6 points, and one for going between the side goalposts. A typical game has scores of ~80-100. The Aussies are totally into it, and it looks like a crazy game to watch. I would love to see a game live.
