We got up and geared up for a big hike up the mountain to the Labyrinth. The
trails here lack switchbacks and this trail went straight up a creek bed, which
meant a lot of hard work to climb up the rocks. About half way up we started to
see views of Lake St. Clair. It was a very steep hike, but we made it to the top
and were rewarded with stunning views and lovely alpine high country. It is pretty cool to be able to see how both similar and different this type
of alpine area is compared to other alpine areas we've been to. The overall
layout is the same: scraggly rock peaks rising out of the brushy land, with
jagged-edged lakes around. But the bushes and trees look very different-still
eucalyptus up here dotting the land with high trees. There is some animal that
eats lots of berries and leaves pink poop everywhere. We hiked past Cyane Lake and Lake Ophion and finally reached Lake Elysia. The
views of the Acropolis and Mount Geryon were beautiful. Jason, Angie and Pat
circumnavigated Lake Elysia and found a beautiful campsite with two tent spots
and nice rocks for sitting. We make TONS of lentils and rice for dinner and had
a nice dessert while looking at the stars, including the Milky Way. We spent a
great deal of time each night joking around and playing. |
