The rain started in the middle of the night and we stayed in our tents as
long as possible in the morning. The rain foiled our plans of climbing Mount
Geryon since it was covered in clouds. Jason and Pat made coffee and Jason
tutored Pat in the correct usage of "funk", "funk ass", and "triple funk". Pat
is catching on. The rain seemed to come in spurts-20 minutes of dry, 20 minutes
of light, and then 20 minutes of hard rain. Pat, Angie and I went exploring and looked at a number of very funky
lichens-including one that was white with a coral structure to it-and saw
several lakes too. The eucalyptus trees and the lakes are beautiful in the fog;
it brings out a very different quality in them. We returned for lunch and then
Angie, Jason and I all spent time in the tents reading, talking and playing
games while Pat did more exploring. Jason taught me Texas Hold 'Em which is the
poker game they play in the World Series of Poker and a great game. That was
after he lost five straight games of gin. We finally got a bit stir-crazy from being in the tent and got out and made
dinner together. We wanted to stay outside and talk but the rain drove us back
into our tents. We finally figured out that we could play a game where we each
came up with three facts and one made up one statement and everyone else had to
guess which one was untrue. Most people did themes, including "oceanographic
theories," "facts about aphids," "Microsoft history," "places Pat has streaked,"
"fish," "scientology," and "astronomy." It was very fun. To cap off the evening
Pat handed out chocolate to everyone. We seem to eat to deal with the rain
because we ate over ½ a pepperoni sausage today too. The rain continued through much of the night, turning into sleet before
dawn. |
